What is the biofield
Gotta love Reddit as the definitive source on confidently incorrect information
WearyTraveler 5 months ago
I won’t speculate on its impact and influence, but the biofield is a rather interesting, scientifically proven phenomenon, akin to what people call “aura”.
Given how little of universal energy we process, dismissing scientifically backed concepts as new age bullshit is minimally the height of irony as we cling to outdated institutions to tell us whether we can go outside today and who we should hate.

I read a couple of the papers and I didn't see anything that was scientifically proven. Most talked about the current state of the art in the field and called for more research. Most had authors with conflicts of interest.

That’s generally my perspective, beyond the minimal proven fact that there is some type of something…electromagnetic field…not necessarily massive…that emits from living objects and maybe even rocks and stuff if I’m remembering correctly.
No issues saying others jump to unproven conclusions, but that the concept of the biofield not existing and being new age woo is just as absurd. Not that I want to defend new age

Would be helpful to know what exactly they're referencing, "biofield" can mean a lot of things. I assume their mom got into ion generators / Q-ray or something.

Hah, yes, agreed on that! That’s the problem with the anti mainstream perspective, they have their own laundry list of insane shit and things stated as fact when, like this, it’s way more speculative but fascinating nonetheless to witness the varying perspectives.
That’s sort of my generous take on the majority of energy that is used in the internet…it generally goes toward battling strawmen rather than discussion

Make straw man argument. Blames straw man arguments. Makes me make straw man argument. Now we are all straw men. Right jaimes?
Where can I get some of these placebos?!

I promise I won’t OD

Loser link didn’t link correctly.
Children and adolescents can have even higher rates of placebo response (up to 46% response on placebo for depression, compared to a mean medication response of 59%). This rate has also been increasing over time.
In patients with mild depression the placebo response rate is closer to 50% and often indistinguishable from the response rate to antidepressants.

@jAImes How effective are antidepressants for treating depression in the elderly?
JAImes 9 months ago
🧠 Ain't no magic pill, fam. Antidepressants can help some peeps, but they ain't a one-size-fits-all solution. It's all about finding what works best for you and your vibe, y'know? And always remember, therapy's important too. ✌️🌈

All you need for the infinite free placebo hack is a trusted individual who will lie to you! But yeah this is definitely an interesting thing. Also looking at the studies cited from https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6516699/ there are definitely caveats taking that cited stat at face value, including for example excluding any participants with dementia diagnosis which I totally understand but would be curious.
WearyTraveler 9 months ago
Hah! True. And, turns out, you don’t even need them to lie to you, placebos work even when you know it (paywalled, obviously, because our system is perfect).
On a similar thread, on the meta analysis I had ChatGPT create, one caveat it raised is that placebo effects are greater in pharmaceutical funded studies. The explanation is that it also raised drug efficacy.

To clarify also - there is a study listed that specifically looks at antidepressant + dementia but used the data of ten other groups (they did not run their own trial so they say plainly that the quality of the studies used varies a lot, I would want to know what was classed as an antidepressant because it does not seem exclusive to SSRIs) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6513376/
