The drunk kids, the Catholics, they’re all about the same. They’re waiting for something, hoping to be saved

I just realized that there’s has a double meaning in the lyric “They say it’s murder on your folk career to make a rock record with the disappeared” where “a rock record” is also “Iraq record”. So, he’s saying both switching the sound from light acoustic to heavy rock will lose fans, but so will switching from a more support the trolls country folk to anti Iraq war types.

On the topic of protest songs, I think this is actually self reflective and critical to what is ultimately accomplished with such activities.

“On the way home I held your camera like a Bible
Just wishing so bad that it held some kind of truth”

I see that as more of creating a parallel between protestors and religious people, misguidedly hoping to find truth in the wrong places.

“ And just when I get so lonesome I can't speak
I see some flowers on a hillside
Like a wall of new TVs”

The end result, he’s still not happy, even in a place this serene.
